Pocahontas County, West Virginia

Nestled on the southeast border of West Virginia is the wild and wonderful Pocahontas County, which is recognized as the home of the popular Snowshoe Mountain. Snowshoe Mountain offers many amenities like skiing, snow boarding, tubing, swimming, and much more. The name Pocahontas originates from the daughter of a chief who was an Indian from the first established colony in Jamestown in 1821.

Pocahontas is also birthplace of several rivers that spread out from the Monongahela National Forest. Eight rivers originate in Pocahontas County, including Cherry River, Elk River, Tygart Valley River, Gauley River, Greenbrier River, Cheat River (Shavers Fork), Cranberry River and Williams River. Marlinton, with a population of about 1,200, is the county seat of Pocahontas County and other small towns include Durbin, Bartow, Green Bank and Hillsboro. Although only about 9,000 people live in the county permanently, a 2008 survey estimates that an additional 30,000 people own vacation property here.

Major highways in Pocahontas County include US Highway 219, US Highway 250, Route 92, Route 55, Route 66, Route 84, Route 28 and Route 39. Since most towns are very small, drivers must navigate two-lane roads and narrow highways to get from one community to the next. This, in combination with a high number of out-of-town visitors each season, increases the likelihood of auto accidents in Pocahontas County. In 2013 alone, this sparsely populated area reported less than 15 fatal vehicle crashes.
